What is a well built car like VW, but dependable liek toyota?

i dont like toyota's interior. it's too cheap. toyotas aren't as strong as others. VW is strong, well built, and safe, but i heard its expensive to maintain and you should take it to VW dealers for oil changes and tune ups and anything else? true?
